After years in the making, the “Avatar” of civil justice, the much-hyped revisions to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, finally come online on December 1. (Only congressional action can block the way now, and observers say that’s about as likely as . . . well, congressional action.) There is no shortage of tour guides ready to show you the way through these seismic shifts to the civil justice landscape. A good starting point is the “Rules Amendment Roadshow,” a joint effort of the ABA Section of Litigation and the Duke Law Center for Judicial Studies. This 13-city tour launches on Nov. 10 in the Thurgood Marshall U.S. Courthouse in New York City and concludes in Miami on April Fool’s Day. The moderators of the discussion of the “most important federal discovery changes in over a decade” are U.S. District Judge Lee H. Rosenthal of the Southern District of Texas and Prof. Steven Gensler of the University of Oklahoma College of Law, with local legal lights dropping in along the way.
