50 Women to Watch: Doreen E. Lilienfeld

CCBJ recently unveiled our 2024 list of 50 Women to Watch. Please join us in celebrating these game-changers in our industry.

Doreen E. Lilienfeld, Co-Managing Partner of the U.S., A&O Shearman

Doreen is Co-Managing Partner of the U.S. at A&O Shearman and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. She also previously served as the Practice Group Leader for the Global Governance & Advisory Practice Group; Compensation, Governance and ERISA/Private Clients.

She focuses on a wide variety of compensation-related matters, including the design and implementation of retention and compensation plans, disclosure and regulatory compliance, and employment negotiations with senior executives. She has advised both U.S. and non-U.S. issuers on corporate governance and regulatory requirements relating to compensation and benefits matters and high-profile individuals in their employment and severance negotiations.

Doreen has been a resident in the Frankfurt, London and Bay Area offices of Shearman & Sterling. For the past twenty-years, Doreen has spearheaded the publication of our annual survey of the compensation-related corporate governance practices of the largest 100 domestic issuers. She is a lecturer in Executive Compensation at the Berkeley School of Law.

CCBJ asked each of our candidates to pass it forward with a few words of wisdom for the next generation.

What advice would you offer your younger self?
I would probably offer the same advice to myself then and now - it will all work out in the end, so don't sweat the small stuff. Have confidence and the rest will come.

Please describe your proudest individual or team achievement.
My proudest team achievements are also my proudest individual achievements - our rankings, our awards in the corporate governance space, and the ability to recruit a bench of stars reflects on and redounds to the benefit of us all.

Where would you see the legal profession in 10+ years?
I would love to see the legal profession providing a truly hospitable place for women to thrive - where the skills that women bring to management and collaboration are highly valued and recognized.

What are your favorite books, professional sports, entertainment and/or extracurricular activities?
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge fan of the New York Yankees. Spending any time in the Bronx in October for the postseason means I am in my happy place!

Please include a quote that inspires you.
"There may be people with more talent than you, but there is no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do."
- Derek Jeter
