50 Women to Watch: Jennifer Rubin

Jennifer Rubin, Partner and Member of Employment, Labor and Benefits Section, Mintz Levin

Jen is a bicoastal employment lawyer who enjoys crafting legal solutions to employment challenges. Her clients include businesses and executives in technology, financial services, publishing, retail, professional services, and health care. Her law practice focuses not just on pragmatic problem-solving, but also trial work, with a focus on class actions, trade secrets and employment mobility disputes.

Jen recently served on the Mintz Policy (Executive) Committee and she Co-Chairs the firm’s ESG Practice Group, which leverages her experience advising corporate boards on social and governance issues. Jen is a Chambers-ranked attorney with an AV Preeminent ranking from Martindale-Hubbell; she is also recognized in the Legal 500. What Jen enjoys most is using her legal talents to serve her community. She has been a long-time faculty member and advisor to The Honor Foundation, a non-profit organization that assists Navy Seals and other armed services special operators transition from military service to the private sector.

She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Midway Museum, and is a Co-Chair of the San Diego 50/50 Women on Boards Leadership Committee. In addition to her law practice and leadership roles, Jen regularly speaks and writes about employment trends and industry-related information. She is a frequent commentator and has been interviewed by national publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Bloomberg Law, Corporate Counsel, Law360, and American Banker. She lives in the San Diego area with her husband, and they enjoy spending time with their four adult children.

What is your proudest achievement?

Finding a pathway to success that includes personal and professional fulfillment that sets an example I hope is worthy of emulation.

What is the most influential piece of advice (professional or personal) you have received?

"You should be a lawyer" (direct quote from my college roommate who said she was never able to win an argument!)

Where do you see the legal profession in 10+ years?

A more heterogeneous community reflective of the communities we serve

What is/are your favorite extracurricular activity/activities?

Sunday dinners with our adult children and their significant others. Sharing family time over homecooked food is the best part of my week!

What is one thing people should know about you but don't?

I learned to surf when I moved to California.

If you were not a legal professional, what other line of work would you pursue?

Teaching - although that is really the essence of the law
