Wisconsin Bar Looks At Technology And Media

Join the Wisconsin Bar for a program focusing on Public Records and Open Meetings on Thursday, September 30, at the State Bar Center, 5302 Eastpark Boulevard in Madison, Wisconsin.

The agenda is from 8:30 a.m. until 5:15 p.m., and there will also be video replay on Thursday, October 28.

The onslaught of new technologies makes managing electronically stored information a continuing challenge. In this seminar participants will explore the potential dangers and new requirements that ESI presents as online media evolve.

Attendees will learn how to survive the clash of social media and open meeting laws. Recent court decisions are setting precedents affecting the way public employees use email and social media tools. Learn about who owns tweets and texts and if these are public records. As these new social media channels appear, custodians of public records need to adapt. Participants will learn how to create a computer use policy that ensures compliance with the Wisconsin Open Records and Public Meetings Laws, as well as potential e-discovery obligations.

Topics will include recent case law and legislative updates; whether a personal email from work is private; the ethics of electronic records; and how to make sure electronic communications conform to open meetings law.

The presenters are Lauri A. Rollings, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District Legal Department; Jane E. Appleby, Quarles & Brady LLP; Thomas C. Bellavia, Wisconsin Department of Justice; and Kelly H. Twigger, ESI Attorneys LLC.
