On Tuesday, December 14, the Vermont Bar Association will offer a teleseminar titled What Employment Lawyers Need to Know about Social Media.The seminar will run from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. EST.
The use of social media - online blogs, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and more - has become mainstream in the workplace. Employees use office computers and home computers to talk to co-workers and to the outside world about themselves, their companies and their work. These communications are widely accessible, spread very rapidly and can easily get out of control, exposing employers to liability for employee torts, discrimination against other co-workers, the loss of confidential information and much more.This program will provide participants with a guide to the sources of employer liability when employees use social media at work and at home, principles for drafting effective workplace and off-site restrictions on the use of social media, and potential employer uses of social media to screen job applicants.
The seminar will be led by Gregg M. Lemely, partner of Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C., who will cover topics such as How Social Media use by Employees at Work and at Home Exposes Employers to Liability, and Social Media Torts - Tortuous Interference, Defamation, and Invasion of Privacy.
