Toronto Seminar Looks At International Law And Government Subsidies

The Canadian Bar Association will present a seminar titled International Law - Show Me the Money: Understanding and Securing Government Subsidies for Your Client on Friday, October 28, at the OBA Conference Centre, 20 Toronto Street, Toronto. It begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 12:30 p.m.

Participants will hear how the global recession complicated traditional understandings of how the global economy functions and how far each government can or should go to protect its economy and industrial sectors from collapse. During the recession, governments undertook economic strategies that would have been unimaginable ten years earlier, using bail-outs, currency manipulation, tax breaks, grants, loans and other consumer, supplier and corporate subsidies to bolster failing economies and permit the survival of desperate industries. Some of these programs are now being subjected to the detailed and unexpected WTO scrutiny. As governments continue to try to help their economies recover, it is more important than ever to understand the global trade rules that govern governments' participation in the private economy.

Topics include Understanding Subsidies: the "Picket Fences" and Do's and Don'ts of Subsidy Program Development; Currency Manipulation: Prohibited Subsidy or Legitimate Fiscal Policy?; Government Support for Environmentally Friendly Initiatives; and Chasing The Money: Ethical Considerations.

The speakers are Heather Innes, General Motors; John Boscariol, McCarthy Tétrault LLP; Cliff Sosnow, Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP; Dunniela Kaufman, Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP; and Caleb P. Burns, Wiley Rein LLP.
