Further expanding its rapidly growing Intellectual Property practice, Nixon Peabody LLP welcomes veteran litigation attorneys Tim Maloney, who joins as partner, and senior counsel Karl Fink, to the firm’s Chicago office.
Tim and Karl are both experienced trial lawyers with a winning track record litigating all aspects of intellectual property enforcement and defense with a particular emphasis on patent litigation. Their arrival comes as the firm’s Intellectual Property practice has continued to expand in targeted markets in response to evolving client needs. Last month, former Western District of Texas law clerk Nicole Sims joined the firm’s Washington, DC office as an associate in the Intellectual Property practice. Nixon Peabody also recently welcomed counsel Michael W. Gray, who focuses his practice on helping high-tech clients navigate litigation and protect their intellectual property and trade secrets, and associate Taylor E. Pfeifer to its Los Angeles office.

With more than 30 years of experience in IP and technology-related commercial litigation, Tim has led many successful complex cases, including numerous jury trials and Federal Circuit appeals. He is among the most active attorneys representing patent owners against validity challenges lodged in the US Patent & Trademark Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board. He also advises clients on trade secret, antitrust, trademark, unfair competition, and technology licensing matters, in addition to assisting in structuring and implementing effective IP strategies in IP-intensive M&A agreements and business transactions.
Tim has a strong interest and deep experience in IP monetization strategies and has helped numerous companies strategically build and protect comprehensive IP portfolios.
In addition to his patent enforcement work, Karl’s practice includes all aspects of commercial and intellectual property litigation, as well as advising clients on IP valuations, joint ventures, other related business decisions, and patent creation, management, validity, and licensing matters. As co-founder of a fitness and physical therapy equipment startup, he has a unique perspective on the IP and business needs of emerging and growing companies. He has extensive experience enforcing patents for clients with significant market share in their respective industries and has successfully represented clients in state and federal courts across the country, both at trial and on appeal, as well as in the International Trade Commission.

Tim earned his JD from the University of Illinois College of Law and his BS from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Karl earned his JD from the University of Michigan Law School and his BS, magna cum laude, from the University of Michigan. Among his pro bono work, Karl has handled numerous civil rights matters on behalf of incarcerated individuals through the Trial Bar Pro Bono Program of the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
