Society Of Corporate Secretaries Hosts National Conference

The Society of Corporate Secretaries and Governance Professionals will hold a five-day national conference in Chicago on Wednesday, July 7 through Sunday, July 11.

The meeting will be located at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers, 301 North Water Street in Chicago.

This year's theme is Navigating the Winds of Change - Sailing Through the Next Year of Change & Challenges.

On Wednesday, July 7, there will be two pre-conference workshops beginning at 11:00 a.m. and running through 4:45 p.m. The first workshop on leadership development will be led by William J. White, professor, McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University. This program will be followed by an ethics workshop facilitated by Gretchen A. Winter, executive director for the Center for Professionals Responsibility in Business and Society. At 6:30 p.m. the opening reception begins followed by dinner.

Thursday's program will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a welcome address delivered by Mellody Hobson, president of Ariel Investments, and will be followed by panels that focus on the role of the lead independent director, current issues and challenges in the boardroom, and an examination of the evolution of the role of the corporate secretary.

Friday's program will begin at 8:45 a.m. with an update on the SEC presented by the chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Mary L. Schapiro. Breakout sessions will follow and include proxy plumbing, executive compensation and international corporate governance. The meetings will adjourn at 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday the day will begin at 8:45 a.m. with a regulatory and legislative development discussion and will be followed by a panel discussion with society leaders until 1:00 p.m.Sunday's optional event is a Chicago White Sox baseball game at noon.
