Seminar To Discuss The Subprime Crisis And Criminal Responsibility

On Monday, January 12, from 6 to 9 p.m., the New York City Bar Association will sponsor a program titled Subprime Market Meltdown - the Criminal Prosecutions Begin at the House of the Association, 42 West 44th Street in New York City.

A panel of experts chaired by Michael Campion Miller, Steptoe & Johnson LLP, will discuss the issues.

The subprime market meltdown is spilling into the criminal courts as prosecutors announce new indictments and arrests. Charges run the gamut from mortgage origination fraud, where the alleged victims are homeowners and financial institutions, to fraud in the inner sanctums of major hedge funds, where the alleged victims are investors in fixed-income security funds. The panel will discuss these cases and the viability of the government's legal theories. It will also address how targets and defendants can best defend against these allegations and the regulatory and civil litigation which will accompany or follow these charges.
