Seminar Focus: Analyzing Financial Statements

The Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA) is offering a CLE seminar titled Understanding and Analyzing Financial Statements.

The program will take place on Thursday, July 19 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Minnesota CLE Conference Center, Seventh Street and Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis.

The seminar will show easily adaptable techniques for reading a balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flows, helping attorneys spot financial and legal issues. Discussions will focus on: analyzing the statement, from short-term liquidity to cash flow and forecasting and return of invested capital; the manipulation, use and abuse of financial statements and other misleading practices; special reporting issues including leases, contingent liabilities and business combinations, and reporting methods, audits, compilations, income vs. cash flow, depreciable assets, capitalization vs. expensing, and inventory flow assumptions.

The speaker is Douglas R. Smith, a CPA who has taught accounting subjects to attorneys for 15 years.
