Barnes & Thornburg has added Scott Hulsey as a partner in the Washington D.C. and Atlanta offices. Hulsey, a former official in the Department of Justice and Chief Compliance Officer for a former GE company joins the Litigation Department.
Hulsey represents clients in matters involving government investigations and defending government enforcement actions, as well as in developing compliance programs. Hulsey has significant trial experience and handles a wide range of white collar, national security, compliance, and commercial engagements, including for complex, cross-border matters.
“Scott has firsthand experience as a high-ranking DOJ official, making him an incredible asset for his clients when working through complex government investigations and enforcement actions,” said Randy Brown, chair of the firm’s Litigation Department. “With his knowledge of the investigation process and extensive trial experience, Scott is well positioned to defend institutions facing enforcement matters.”
Notably, Hulsey represented top executives and upper management of an electronic consumer product company in connection with an investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office into alleged false marketing practices, and in a parallel multi-district class action litigation. He has also represented one of the world's largest investment management firms in numerous grand jury investigations.
While in the DOJ, Hulsey was a federal prosecutor in the Northern District of Georgia and tried more than sixty federal and state cases throughout his career, including against large scale international criminal organizations. Following his time in the DOJ, Hulsey served as a Chief Compliance Officer at a General Electric subsidiary, helping ensure operations were conducted in accordance with applicable rules and regulations in countries across the globe.
“Scott has established a great reputation throughout his time as a DOJ official, a chief compliance officer and in his private practice,” said Roscoe Howard, Washington D.C. office managing partner. “We are thrilled to continue our growth in the region with the addition of Scott.”
Hulsey earned his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, cum laude and his B.A. from Duke University, cum laude.
