Pro Bono Partnership Receives Multiyear Grant From The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven

Pro Bono Partnership (the Partnership) is pleased to announce it was awarded a $15,000, two-year grant from The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. These funds will support the Partnership’s mission to strengthen and empower nonprofits and communities by providing free legal services to nonprofit organizations in the Greater New Haven area.

The Community Foundation’s generous grant will support the Partnership’s direct legal assistance, Legal Resource Helpline, and educational initiatives like webinars and workshops designed to help nonprofit staff and board members identify pertinent legal issues, adopt best practices, and avoid risk in the Foundation’s service area.

“We’re thrilled that The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven is continuing to support Pro Bono Partnership’s efforts in the Greater New Haven area,” said Pro Bono Partnership program director, Priya Morganstern, Esq. “Every nonprofit benefits from expert legal advice, and with the financial backing of partners like The Community Foundation, we can continue to provide that service free of charge to local nonprofits so they can focus precious resources on serving their constituents in the Greater New Haven area,” she continued.

Each year, demand for the Partnership’s services increases. In fact, last year was the busiest in the Partnership’s 20 -year history! In 2016, Pro Bono Partnership helped 34 nonprofits in the Greater New Haven area, providing nearly 1,000 hours of free legal services valued at more than $400,000. Legal matters range from review of bylaws and core policies to employment and real estate issues and protection of intellectual property. A recently resolved matter involving Schooner, Inc. and New Haven Land Trust enabled the organizations to preserve an important community resource, and allowed the camp to direct funding to programming rather than legal fees. As another nonprofit executive said recently of Pro Bono Partnership, “The financial support that we receive is almost completely dedicated to our programs and services, so getting pro bono legal services is such a godsend!”
