PLI Presents Pocket MBA: Advice On Finance For Lawyers

A recent survey found that 80 percent of Forbes 1,000 executives believe their attorneys lack an adequate understanding of finance and accounting. On Thursday and Friday, December 4 and 5, The Practising Law Institute will present a program titled Pocket MBA for Lawyers 2008: Everything You Need To Know About Finance. The two-day event will take place at the University of Chicago Gleacher Center, 450 North Cityfront Plaza Drive, Chicago; both days will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 5 p.m.

The course is targeted to corporate lawyers, litigators, securities and corporate finance lawyers, corporate counsel and bankruptcy lawyers, regardless of their familiarity with financial matters. Litigators involved in complex securities litigation, restructuring or the representation of financial institutions are also among the intended participants.

Special features of the course include tips for creating and analyzing financial data on clients to better understand and anticipate the business issues or decisions they face; real-world case examples designed to give attendees the financial and accounting concepts; and participants will have the opportunity to ask a program instructor follow-up questions for one hour. The post-program session will give attendees the opportunity to digest program material and consider its practical application to their workplace.

Planners expect the participants to increase their understanding of client business and increase their value as a legal advisor, use financial analysis to spot key financial and accounting issues, gain the know-how to appreciate the intricacies of a cash-flow cycle, determine the financial health of a company, gain the needed tools to understand and interpret valuation analysis, understand the financials in the SEC filings and contract representations, and review important issues in the post-Sarbanes-Oxley world, including Reg FD, new FASB rules and the importance of the Audit Committee.

Course planners for this event are Joseph A. Augustine and Donna M. Hitscherich of Gnosis Advisors LLC; the program attorney is Danielle T. Bersofsky, Practising Law Institute.
