The global law firm Jones Day announced that Peter Schwingler has joined as a partner in its Antitrust & Competition Law Practice. Mr. Schwingler will be based in the Firm’s Minneapolis Office.
Mr. Schwingler is an experienced antitrust litigator who has worked in both private practice and for the U.S. government. In private practice, he has defended major corporations in high-stakes antitrust class actions, Section 7 actions by the Antitrust Division, Second Requests before the Federal Trade Commission, and multiple civil and criminal antitrust investigations. He also served as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), where he spent four years in the Antitrust Division. During this time, he conducted investigations into potential violations of U.S. antitrust laws, with a focus on merger reviews under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act.
“Peter’s experience as a seasoned DOJ attorney and antitrust defense litigator for corporate clients provides him with a robust understanding of enforcement actions and compliance strategies,” said Craig Waldman, Co-Leader of Jones Day’s Antitrust & Competition Law Practice. “His addition to our practice group will be a valuable asset to our clients throughout the country and I am pleased to welcome him to the Firm.”
At Jones Day Mr. Schwingler will spend time in both Minneapolis and Washington, playing a part in Jones Day’s representation of clients in many of the most challenging and complex antitrust matters, including transactions, investigations, litigation, and compliance counseling. The Firm’s globally integrated Antitrust & Competition Law Practice includes lawyers in business centers worldwide, providing clients with depth in all areas of antitrust law across the U.S., Europe, and Asia-Pacific regions.
Mr. Schwingler was formerly an adjunct law professor at Georgetown University Law Center, where he taught legal research and analysis.
“Peter has deep roots in Minnesota, both personally and professionally, and extensive experience representing Minnesota companies in complex federal and state compliance matters,” said Brian West Easley, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s Minneapolis Office. “His presence in our office further strengthens the Firm’s capability in antitrust matters in the Midwest, the U.S. and around the world. I am pleased to welcome him to the Firm and to our team here in Minneapolis.”
Mr. Schwingler earned his law degree from Columbia Law School and his undergraduate degree in mathematics and financial economics from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. He began his legal career as Law Clerk to the Hon. James B. Loken, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
“I was attracted to Jones Day because the Firm’s Antitrust Practice is globally recognized for its work on some of the most complex antitrust matters and corporate transactions in jurisdictions around the world,” said Mr. Schwingler. “Locally, Jones Day lawyers are well-known throughout the Twin Cities for their deep commitment to the community and pro bono legal services to a broad range of civic and charitable institutions. I’m proud to join Jones Day and look forward to working with my new colleagues in Minneapolis.”
