On Tuesday, January 18, certified appellate specialist Daniel U. Smith will teach practitioners how to write motions and briefs that capture the court's attention. This morning seminar will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the BASF Conference Center, 301 Battery Street in San Francisco.
Mr. Smith, whose experience includes 34 years of civil appellate practice in the U.S. Supreme Court, the California Supreme Court, and intermediate federal and state appellate courts, will teach participants the most persuasive structure for documents and how to persuade a busy judge with brevity, simplicity, clarity and honesty. He will help lawyers write shorter briefs and increase their chances of winning and will review the writing tips suggested by Justice Antonin Scalia and Bryan A. Garner in their 2008 book, Making Your Case: The Art of Persuading Judges.
