The New York State Bar Association will host its annual meeting 2010 from Monday to Saturday, January 25 to 30, at the Hilton New York, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, NYC.
Meeting highlights include more than 40 CLE programs, an MCLE Presidential Summit, a complimentary President's Reception, a Career Development Conference, a two-day MCLE session for new attorneys, and great networking opportunities.
Attendees are invited to register for as many section and committee meetings as time allows. All meetings are conducted by expert practitioners and are open to all NYSBA members.
On Wednesday, from 2 to 5 p.m., NYSBA's president Michael E. Getnick is convening a special plenary Presidential Summit, which will consist of the following two topics: Social Media in a Free Society: Good or Bad for Democracy, for Business, for Individual Privacy? This panel discussion will explore the use of social media platforms used by politicians and the media and ask what the opportunities and risks are for clients, the legal profession, and society. The second topic, Wrongful Convictions: Protecting the Innocent, Preserving our Justice System, explores the increase in wrongful convictions in recent years and offers a plan to prevent future miscarriages of justice.
The two-day program for new attorneys, Bridging the Gap 2010: Essential Skills for the Next Decade, offers 16 MCLE credits. By attending this session, new attorneys can fulfill all their CLE credits for the year. A complimentary cocktail celebration honoring the year's Outstanding Young Lawyer will be held on Thursday, January 28.
On Monday, January 25, from 6 to 8 p.m., the NYSBA is hosting Celebrating Diversity in the Bar, a networking reception held in collaboration with NYSBA sections and committees and minority and ethnic bar associations in New York. During the celebration, Professor Leonard M. Baynes of St. John's University School of Law and director of the Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights and Economic Development will receive the 2010 Diversity Trailblazer Award.
On Monday, from 1 to 4 p.m., the bar will offer Navigating the New Economy: Career Strategies for lawyers - a complimentary program with leading career and psychology experts who will discuss staying positive and focused on a job search in the current economy. The program will be moderated by Rachel J. Littman of Pace Law School and will be followed by a free networking reception, Social Networking 101: Getting the Most from NYSBA's Social Networking Tools from 4 to 6 pm.
