NYCLA Offers Program On Microfinance

The New York County Lawyers Association will offer a program examining Microfinance Law and Practice on Wednesday, May 11, at NYCLA, 14 Vesey Street in New York City.

The event begins at noon and ends at 3:00 p.m.

Microfinance is a term used to describe financial services available to low-income individuals or to those without access to traditional banking services. On a global level, it is an effective way to combat poverty and stimulate global economies. Yet, left unregulated, it can also lead to serious abuses.

Participants will learn from a panel of experts about the current state of microfinance, the applicable laws governing it, and its importance to the global economy. The panel will also discuss the laws that need to be passed to effectively combat potential abuses.

On faculty are Janiece Brown Spitzmueller, NYC Department of Housing, Preservation &Development, chair, Africa Committee, NYSBA; Anita Bernstein, professor, Brooklyn Law School; Chuck Day, director, Opportunity International; Steven Godeke, principal, Godeke Consulting and adjunct professor, NYU Stern School of Business; and Denise Scotto, founder, Global Legal Strategies.
