The New York County Lawyers Association is holding an event that will examine Islamic law titled Islamic Law 101: An Introduction to Islamic Legal Theory and Modern Practice.
It will be held on Tuesday, May 4, at the NYCLA located on 14 Vesey Street in New York City.The seminar will begin at 7:00 p.m. and end at 8:00 pm.
This timely course will offer participants an overview of Shari'ah or Islamic law, focusing on sources, rules of interpretation and jurisprudence, and will be followed by a brief survey of the use of Islamic law in modern legal systems abroad. The presenters will use family law as an example to illustrate how Islamic law has played a role in the U.S. legal system.
The speakers are Sadiq Reza, a law professor at New York Law School who teaches criminal law and procedure and Islamic Law. In 2008 he was named Carnegie Scholar for his work on criminal procedure under Islamic law. The other presenter is Abed Awad of the Law Offices of Abed Awad, an adjunct law professor at Rutgers Law School and Pace Law School who teaches Islamic jurisprudence and matrimonial litigation. Mr. Awad has been recognized as an expert witness in Islamic and Middle Eastern law courts throughout the U.S.
