The MCLE has scheduled a seminar, Preventing and Handling Data Security Breaches, for Tuesday, January 12, at the Hilton Garden Inn, 5 Wheeler Road in Burlington. It will run from 1 to 5 p.m.
Why attend? Massive security breaches of repositories of personal information have led to acute public awareness of the dangers of identity theft, and that in turn led to federal and state legislative and administrative responses that affect clients and attorneys. Designed for counselors to businesses that hold the personal information of others and counselors to businesses and individuals who are victims of breaches, this course will cover the following topics: the history and business context of data security breach regulation; requirements of 201 CMR 17.00 and sister state regulations; requirements of the FTC Red Flags Rule and Health Breach Notification Rule; technology and procedures for compliance and avoiding liability; current issues in construction and prospects for enforcement; consumer remedies for threatened or actual identity theft; and new legislation.
