On Wednesday, October 27, the Los Angeles County Bar Association will celebrate National Pro Bono Week with an evening of CLE trainings, a keynote address, and a cocktail and networking hour.
The event will be held at the bar association, 1055 West 7th Street in Los Angeles. It will include four one-hour MCLE presentations on ethics, substance abuse, and elimination of bias with a focus on pro bono representation, and it will be hosted by the SoCal Pro Bono Managers and the LACBA Barristers Section and Senior Lawyers. In addition to celebrating pro bono as part of National Pro Bono week, attendees will be given the opportunity to network at an informal cocktail reception with representatives of the public interest law firms to learn about ways to get involved.
Topics to be covered in the hour-long segments are Ethical Considerations when Pro Bono Representation Collides with Personal Beliefs and Business Philosophy;Clearing Conflicts in a Clinic Setting while Assisting Highly Vulnerable Clients; Eliminating Bias in the Workplace - Strategies for Providing Reasonable Accommodations to Employees, Volunteers and Others with Disabilities within Your Workplace; and Substance Abuse and Legal Practice. During the reception, keynote speaker A. Howard Matz, U.S. district judge for the Central District of California at Los Angeles, will offer his views, and attendees can meet with legal service providers to discuss ways to pursue professional development through pro bono while assisting the most vulnerable members of our community.
Among the speakers are Catherine T. Broderick, Jones Day; James M. Fischer, Southwestern Law School; Bill Patton, Whittier Law School; and Charles Song, Howrey LLP.
