Lawyers Alliance For New York Supports Homeless Shelter In Brooklyn

The Lawyers Alliance for New York and CAMBA, a community-based social service organization, have partnered to provide one thousand units of permanent housing for the homeless in Brooklyn by 2015.

In late 2007, a parcel of land on Crooke Avenue in Brooklyn was purchased out of a bankruptcy proceeding to offer affordable, supportive housing to lower-income and formerly homeless individuals.

The project will provide 53 units of safe, permanent housing, community services and on-site case management. The building will incorporate sustainable elements to reduce energy costs and provide a garden and patio. The units will be designated for low-income residents, the homeless, and the disabled of the Brooklyn community it will service.

Pro bono attorneys at Chadbourne & Parke provided initial representation. The Lawyers Alliance formed the general partner and limited partnerships that will own the beneficial interest in this project and is handling the low-income housing tax credit transaction and the construction loans from the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development. The Alliance hopes to close on the loans by the late fall of this year and to get the project moving forward as soon as possible.
