Jeremy Shockett, formerly New York State’s Deputy Secretary for Public Safety during the pandemic, has joined Anderson Kill as a shareholder in the New York office and a member of the firm’s White Collar Crime and Corporate and Commercial Litigation practice groups.
Mr. Shockett has more than 25 years of experience as a prosecutor in New York, serving in the District Attorney’s Offices in Brooklyn and the Bronx, as well as in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of New York.
Prior to joining Anderson Kill, in his state Cabinet position, Mr. Shockett managed the Governor’s public safety and homeland security priorities, overseeing eight agencies with a workforce of over 35,000 employees and an annual budget of more than $5 billion. He was also the Co-Chair of the New York State Cyber-Security Advisory Board, leading a team of government and private sector experts to shape and implement the State’s cyber defenses and responses, including keeping the State’s elections secure from outside influence. Additionally, he initiated and led table-top security exercises covering mass-fatality incidents, large scale transportation hubs, and state-wide cyber incidents. As Chair of the state’s Raise the Age and Bail Reform implementation committees, he worked closely with judiciary, defense bar and other stakeholders on justice reform initiatives.
During the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, Mr. Shockett oversaw construction and management of multiple 1,000-person-per-day Covid testing sites in New York City, managing teams of National Guard, medical staff, logistics personnel and vendors. He later transitioned to opening and operating mass vaccination sites in NYC.
Prior to joining New York’s executive branch, Mr. Shockett served as the First Deputy Chief of the Trial Division for the Kings County District Attorney’s Office, Brooklyn, NY, where he supervised over 400 attorneys in 11 bureaus, including Homicide, Human Trafficking and Hate Crimes, with a yearly caseload of approximately 60,000. He also implemented the District Attorney’s key criminal justice reforms, including Justice 2020 and Raise the Age.
Previously, Mr. Shockett served for 25 years in the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office, eventually becoming Chief of the Trial Division and Counsel to the Trial Division. In that position he led more than 200 experienced prosecutors and support staff responsible for investigating and prosecuting more than 3,000 of the Office’s most serious felonies annually. For 11 of those years, Mr. Shockett also was a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, Organized Crime and Gangs Section at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, where he was lead investigator and co-lead counsel in an investigation spanning five states and ten law enforcement agencies that resulted in charges against dozens of members of a violent national drug robbery ring. He was the recipient of the Federal Drug Agents Foundation True American Hero award.
Ethan Greenberg, Co-chair of Anderson Kill’s White Collar practice group and a former Acting New York State Supreme Court Justice in Bronx County, commented, “In my years on the Bronx bench I came to know Jeremy Shockett as a gifted, tough, and fair prosecutor. That impression of Jeremy is shared by federal and state court judges throughout the New York area. Jeremy has supervised, worked with and opposed in court thousands of attorneys who now hold important positions in both government and private practice and who hold Jeremy in high regard. His experience running high stakes, complex cases as both a federal and state prosecutor, as well as his service at the top levels of state government, will make him a “go-to” lawyer for businesses and individuals facing criminal and regulatory matters. We are thrilled to have him on board, and we’re confident he will help to grow our White Collar practice.”
