Healthcare Partner Jason Schultz Joins Barnes & Thornburg in South Bend

Barnes & Thornburg has announced the addition of Jason Schultz as a partner in the firm’s Healthcare Department. Schultz, who brings more than 15 years of in-house and private practice experience, will be based out of the firm’s South Bend office.

Schultz comes to Barnes & Thornburg after almost 12 years of experience with a multi-hospital health system, where he served as general counsel for nine years before being selected for the role of vice president of strategy and business development. Under his tenure, he provided legal and compliance-related advice to three hospital campuses, 26 physician office locations, urgent care, three long-term care facilities, a home health entity, and ownership interests in multiple health care organizations.

Schultz focuses his practice on advising local, regional, and national healthcare clients on increasingly complex regulations and statutes. He also counsels healthcare entities on strategic affiliations and transactions, government investigations, physician employment, managed care contracting, and value-based care. He has a particular passion for assisting providers with adopting new emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, telehealth, wearable devices and remote patient monitoring.

“Jason spent an extensive amount of time helping a multi-hospital system navigate the complexities of federal and state healthcare laws and regulations, making him a great addition to our growing industry practice group,” said John Kelly, chair of the firm’s Healthcare Department and Healthcare Industry Practice. “His experience, work ethic, and strategic thinking are the qualities that make him a tremendous fit for our team.”

Schultz has experience counseling clients on transactions, hospital joint ventures, Anti-Kickback and Stark Law violations, Accountable Care Organizations, medical staff matters, provider-based determinations, audits, and HIPAA. Additionally, he led government relations for the system, routinely working with federal and state officials on lobbying and advocacy initiatives.

“Jason has worked in the healthcare field for years, giving him a valued perspective on representing healthcare providers and hospitals,” said John Smarrella, South Bend office managing partner. “In addition, his strong record of success in government relations and advocacy makes him a welcome addition to the firm. We are excited Jason is joining the office.”

Schultz earned his J.D. from Washington University School of Law, and his B.S., with highest honors, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
