On November 17, The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel and the firm of Grunfeld, Desiderio, Lebowitz, Silverman & Klestadt LLP co-sponsored a live webinar examining issues with international trade titled Taking Advantage of Customs and Trade Laws. The speaker, Robert Silverman, partner of the Grunfeld, Desideiro Lebowitz, Silverman & Klestadt firm, touched on a number of considerations when developing a product in one country and shipping the product to other countries.
Mr. Silverman explained that knowing the rules can make a substantial transformation in customs and savings for international traders. He identified the different data bases that can be accessed and pointed out the structuring opportunities that can be implemented by international traders to aid with business planning before launch of an international product. Another topic of interest was the different purchase structures and shipments available to traders to help lower the duty payments on goods. Other available resources such as foreign trade zones and drawback programs and the essentials of planning customs valuation were discussed in detail. This course offered tips to participants as to how the customs laws include a number of duty-saving opportunities for companies that take the time and make the investment to find them.
