Georgetown Law and ACC Examine Corporate Legal Concerns Under Obama

Georgetown University School of Law and the Association of Corporate Counsel are presenting a two-day seminar titled The Obama Administration and the Corporation's Legal Concerns, on Thursday and Friday, March 11 and 12, at the Georgetown University Law Center, 600 New Jersey Avenue, NW, Washington DC.

Day one will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 5:30 p.m. followed by a networking cocktail reception. Day two begins at 8:00 a.m. and adjourns at 4:00 p.m.

The featured keynote speaker is Janet Napolitano, secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, who will discuss the corporations' roles, responsibilities and needs surrounding national security. The second keynote address will be given at Thursday's lunch by Katie Couric of CBS news.

Government officials speaking include Thomas C. Baxter, Jr., general counsel and executive vice president of the Legal Group, The Federal Reserve Bank of New York; Daniel Berkovitz, general counsel, U.S. Commodities Futures Trading Commission; Robert Khuzami, director, Division of Enforcement, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission; Hon. Jon Leibowitz, chairman, U.S. Federal Trade Commission, Washington DC; and Lewis Morris, chief counsel, Office of the Inspector General, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

From the academic community, Steven H. Goldblatt, co-director of the Supreme Court Institute, Georgetown University Law Center, will moderate a panel discussion titled Supreme Court Review and Preview, which includes important cases to be decided this term affecting corporations.Robert Pitofsky, Sheey Professor of Antitrust & Trade Regulation Law, also of the Georgetown University Law Center, will moderate the Antitrust Update panel discussion, which will cover comments on the new horizontal merger guidelines, the leniency program, and what the agency reaction will be if lawyers ask for easier antitrust treatment because of the state of the economy.

Attendees will also hear from general counsels of leading companies such as CBS, Proctor & Gamble and AIG on lessons learned and preparing for the future. Government regulators and officials including Hon. Elena Kagan, solicitor general, U.S. Department of Justice, will discuss recent Supreme Court rulings and changes to SEC and FTC regulations. Participants will learn how the broad regulatory reform advocated by the Obama administration will impact corporations.
