The Voice of the Defense Bar has scheduled a three-day conference, Civil Rights and Governmental Tort Liability, for Wednesday through Friday, January 27 to 29, at the Westin San Diego, 400 West Broadway.
The conference offers practical guidance for experienced governmental defense attorneys, an update on the state of qualified immunity, an analysis on recent Supreme Court cases impacting civil rights litigation, and networking opportunities.
The events begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon with sessions about the First Amendment - Government Defense of Employee Speech Issues and Private Speech on Government Property.
On Thursday, the conference offers Employment law - Going Social: The Internet;How to Make Mediation an Effective Tool for Legal Dispute Resolution; How to Make Mediation an Effective Tool for Legal Dispute Resolution;Banging, Shooting and Crashing - The Latest Law Enforcement Tools;and Defense Strategies - Damages and Attorneys' Fees.
Friday's sessions begin at 8:30 a.m. and adjourn at 3:30 p.m. and will include a Supreme Court Review with Erwin Chemerinsky, founding dean and distinguished professor of law at the University of California, Irvine School of Law. Other speakers are Hon. Wayne C. Beyer, chief administrative appeals judge and chair, the Administrative Review Board of the U.S. Department of Labor; Michael W. Odle, a police officer for the city of Los Angeles assigned to Metropolitan Division, Special Weapons and Tactics SWAT team; and Norma V. Cantu, The University of Texas School of Law and former assistant secretary of education for civil rights for eight years.
