Delaware Bar Offers Persuasive Writing Seminar

On Tuesday, December 14 the Delaware State Bar will offer a two-part seminar focusing on persuasive writing.The seminar begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 4:15 p.m., and is at the Delaware State Bar Association, 301 N. Market Street in Wilmington.

Session one is titled Legal Writing & Persuasion in the Smart Phone Age. Today, electronic communication has to be immediate, brief, clear, and powerful, this session will boost participant's instant or near-instant messaging skills. The program will examine how a lawyers' traditional training in writing and communicating ill-prepares them for the new age of "short and to the point." Attendees will be helped to make the transition from traditional writing to the "new style" writing, enabling participants to write more effective e-mails as well as litigation and contract writing.

The second session will cover the Surprisingly Useful Things Legal Writers Can Learn from Fiction. Effective storytelling is an art: though storytelling is an art, there are skills tools, and techniques that can be learned in order to develop the talent. Participants will learn how to become better litigators by improving narrative writing and speaking style.

The nationally acclaimed speaker for this program Steven D. Stark, a writer, lawyer, and consultant who teaches courses on writing and speaking to lawyers and other professionals. A former cultural commentator for CNN, National Public Radio, and the Voice of America, he is the author of four books and one e-book and has written frequently for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic Monthly, and the Boston Globe, where he was an op-ed columnist. His most recent book, World Cup 2010: The Indispensable Guide to Soccer and Geopolitics, was published in the winter of 2010.A former Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School, he is a graduate of Harvard College and Yale Law School.
