DC Seminar Looks At Section 1983: Civil Rights Litigation

On Thursday and Friday, March 24 and 25, Georgetown Law CLE presents a program reviewing Civil Rights Litigation. The seminar will be held at Georgetown University Law Center at 600 New Jersey Avenue, NW in Washington, DC. Thursday's program begins at 7:50 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. On Friday, it begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 1:30 p.m.

Liability arising from Section 1983 cases creates many challenges for courts across the United States. The past year saw many new decisions requiring that plaintiff and defense practitioners track cases and understand the implications in their day-to-day practice. This program will provide participants a chance to study the law of Section 1983 and the pre-litigation and trial strategies that serve as the foundation for success. Attendees will learn how the various circuit courts are applying the "plausible pleading" requirement of Ashcroft v. Iqbal to Section 1983 cases; recent trends in immunity; review damages and fees from the defense perspective; and review the latest Supreme Court cases and their impact on clients.

Among the speakers are Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, University of California, Irvine School of Law; Professor Karen M. Blum, Suffolk University Law School; Wayne C. Beyer, Office of the Attorney General, District of Columbia; and Jack Ryan, Law Enforcement Training and Policy Consultant.
