Civil Rights will be discussed at an upcoming seminar titled Civil and Uncivil Rights in California: The Early Legal History. It will be held at the BASF Conference Center, 301 Battery Street in San Francisco on Thursday, January 22, from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
Moderator John F. Burns, former state archivist and a member of the Board of Directors of the California Supreme Court Historical Society, will lead the discussion concerning the following topics: the legacy of early California civil rights cases that provided a foundation for change in the 20th and 21st centuries; how various racial groups were treated by the legal system a century ago; and the people who tried to advance California's civil rights jurisprudence.
Chief Justice Ronald M. George will provide the introduction. Other speakers are professors Joseph R. Grodin, Hastings College of the Law; Charles J. McClain Jr., University of California at Berkeley; and Shirley Ann Moore, Sacramento State University.
