California Bar SchedulesInternational Arbitration Institute

The State Bar of California has scheduled its annual International Arbitration Conference for Friday, October 23, at the Santa Clara University School of Law, 500 El Camino Real on Santa Clara.

The conference will begin at 9 a.m. and adjourn at 5:45 p.m.

In an attempt to attract a broad range of attendees and include those who are facing challenges in a contemporary technology-focused practice, the conference has been moved to Silicon Valley and will include discussions on technology and the arbitration process.

Topical issues that will be discussed are the arbitration of disputes that arise from cross-border transactions; the proper role of the arbitrator as the various arbitration institutions attempt to update and revise guidelines and rules to adapt to a fluid international environment; whether the new guidelines are improving the process or making it more burdensome; bias in international disputes - an ongoing concern; and new technologies for discovery, communications and the like. The issues will be presented in a panel discussion format with two sessions in the morning and two sessions in the afternoon. Ann Ryan Robertson, chair of the North American Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, will discuss International Arbitration and the Arbitration Fairness Act of 2009. Other presenters include Jennifer Price, partner, King & Spalding; Yoshi Takatori, partner, Paul Hastings, Tokyo; Matthew Vafidis, partner, Holland & Knight; and Pamela K. Fulmer, partner, Jones Day.
