The Boston Bar Association has scheduled a seminar titled On Trial Opposite the SEC for Tuesday, November 17, at the Bar Center, 16 Beacon Street in Boston.
The event will run from 4 to 7 p.m.
Trial counsels who have recently tried cases brought by the SEC and a former SEC trial attorney will share practical insights into how to handle an SEC trial, from pre-trial motions to a verdict. With the recent high-profile rejection of a major SEC settlement and criticism of the SEC's lack of tenacity in pursuing claims, many lawyers expect the number of SEC cases that reach trial to increase substantially.
Attendees will hear what the trial teams have learned about techniques that workfor direct and cross examinations, handling surprise witnesses, opening strategies, motions in limine, obtaining favorable evidentiary rulings, use of technology at trial, and more, all with experienced counsel who have litigated against this determined and resourceful federal agency.
Speakers include Deborah L. Thaxter, George J. Skelly and Anjali Chaturvedi, all from Nixon Peabody LLP's trial team in the SEC v. Goldsworthy case; Ian Roffman from Nutter, McClennen & Fish and former senior trial counsel in the SEC's Boston office; and Michael A. Collora, Dwyer & Collora LLP.
