Bar Of San Francisco Celebrates National Pro Bono Week With Debate

To honor the 2010 National Celebrate Pro Bono Week, the Bar Association of San Francisco is sponsoring a Civil Gideon Debate with an exchange between two lions of the bar - Jim Brosnahan and Lawrence Siskind.

This is a brown bag luncheon that will run from noon to 1 p.m. at Morrison & Foerster, 425 Market Street in San Francisco.

Mr. Brosnahan, senior partner, Morrison & Foerster, and Lawrence Siskind, partner, Harvey Siskind LLP, will debate whether Californians have a right under their state constitution to appointed counsel in civil cases, such as child custody and eviction, in which the individual cannot afford private counsel. The question whether there should be a "Civil Gideon" has been getting attention nationwide, and cases are making their way through the courts of several other states.

The event is free. To register, please email Megan Colla at [email protected] by Tuesday, October 26.
