Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international energy, technology and life sciences law firm, is proud to announce the promotion of eight attorneys to the position of special counsel, effective March 1.

The new special counsel are listed below, with brief biographies that follow.
Bradley Bowling, Intellectual Property, Houston
Brad practices in all areas of intellectual property law, including patent prosecution, patent litigation and patent opinion preparation. He prepares and prosecutes patent applications over a broad range of technologies relating to software, solid state storage, electronics, oil fields tools and geosciences. In the areas of oil exploration and production technologies, he has worked on cases involving seismic imaging and processing, downhole imaging and downhole condition detection, core sampling and testing, fracture design and modeling, reservoir modeling and characterization, and SP logging.
Sarah Dodson, Corporate, Houston
Sarah has a broad corporate practice, representing public and private companies in complex mergers and acquisitions, capital markets and strategic business transactions. She also regularly advises clients on general corporate matters, including corporate governance and securities compliance issues. Sarah’s practice is focused on the media, technology and energy sectors.
Peter Farrell, Tax, Washington, D.C.
Peter focuses on federal income tax matters. His practice focuses on tax-efficient structures for domestic and international mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, separations, restructurings and other reorganizations. In addition, he advises clients on tax matters related to internal planning (both domestic and cross-border), capital markets, debt financings and renewable energy projects.
Lakshmi Ramanathan, Corporate, Houston
Lakshmi represents public and private companies in a broad range of corporate and securities matters. She represents issuers, investment banking firms and other investors in public offerings and private placements of equity and debt securities, including initial public offerings, follow-on and secondary public offerings and Rule 144A offerings. Her practice also includes mergers and acquisitions, debt tender offers, consent solicitations and general corporate matters, including Exchange Act reporting, Section 16 compliance and corporate governance.
Michael Ritter, Intellectual Property, New York
Michael’s practice focuses on patent preparation and prosecution of utility and design patents, patent validity, freedom-to-operate and clearance issues, acquisition-related due diligence, and litigation. With a background in physics and biomedical engineering, his practice spans a broad range of technological fields, including medical devices, consumer products, software and business methods, and applied physics.
Monica Smith, Litigation, Dallas
Monica represents companies in complex commercial disputes, including consumer products class actions, intellectual property disputes, and shareholder and securities litigation. Clients benefit from her deep trial experience in a variety of forums, both federal and state. Outside the courtroom, Monica provides strategic counseling to her clients, with a particular emphasis on counseling in the product labeling space.
David Tobin, Intellectual Property, Dallas
David’s principal practice is intellectual property, with an emphasis on patent litigation. He has litigated complex patent infringement and other intellectual property cases across the country, including in district courts, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and the International Trade Commission. He has taken leading roles in all phases of litigation, from pre-suit investigation through trial and appeal. His practice spans a wide variety of fields, including telecommunications hardware and standards, computer hardware and software, e-commerce, data compression, semiconductor manufacturing and design, fossil and renewable energy, medical devices, chemical processes, and pharmaceutical formulations. In addition to his intellectual property practice, he maintains an activate pro bono docket that includes representing veterans before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims.
James Williams, Intellectual Property, Dallas
James represents clients in a variety of intellectual property matters, with a focus on patent and trade secret litigation. He has experience litigating complex cases between market competitors, and has represented both plaintiffs and defendants. He has also represented patent owners and petitioners in inter partes review before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. He has experience in cases involving a broad range of technologies, including wireless infrastructure, telecommunications, network security, enterprise software, semiconductor devices, electronics, business methods, and other advanced technologies.
