ACI Explores ERISA Litigation In Two-Day Conference

This spring, the American Conference Institute will hold an ERISA Litigation conference on Thursday and Friday, April 14 and 15.The faculty will explain expert defense strategies for leading outside counsel and in-house counsel on litigating today's key issues involving fiduciaries, plan fees and benefit claims.

The conference will run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and from 8:00 a.m. to 5:50 p.m. on Friday at the JW Marriott at Union Square, 500 Post Street in San Francisco.

It will begin with an in-house roundtable on administering changes brought by the Affordable Care Act, managing litigation, and limiting fiduciary liability. The discussion will include preventative measures to eliminate or mitigate ERISA exposure; managing compliance with the Affordable Care Act, and cost-effective ways to implement changes. Among the panelists are Darren A. Fehring, managing attorney for employee benefits, American Airlines, and Nicolaas G. Storm, senior counsel, benefits and labor, Alcoa Inc. On Thursday afternoon, Steven J. Sacher of Jones Day will be among the panelists speaking about Avoiding the Pitfalls in Retiree Welfare Benefits Litigation, which includes an analysis of the issues in funding retiree medical, how health care reform will affect costs going forward now and after 2014, and when retiree medical will face litigation trouble.

On Friday, the day begins with a judges' panel, The Issues on Appeal: Federal Circuit Court Judges Weigh in on ERISA's Appellate Issues, and in the afternoon, ESOP and stock drop litigation; resolving and defending litigation with plan participants and complying with the ACA; and overcoming ERISA's ethical issues will be discussed.
