ACC Institute Examines Role Of Legal Department Leaders

On Wednesday and Thursday, August 18 and 19, the San Francisco Bay Area ACC Chapter is sponsoring The Executive Leadership Institute for Chief Legal Officers and Attorney Managers.

It will be held at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport, 1333 Bayshore Highway in Burlingame and will run for two full days.Participants are urged to attend both days of the institute; if attendance both days isn't possible, participants may select the day with topics most relevant to their practice.

Stephen Chitwood, professor emeritus, The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., is the program presenter. He has designed the institute to be specific to corporate law departments, practical and interactive. Participants will be asked to relate lectures and discussions to their own personal experiences as managers and as individuals who have been supervised and led. Activities will include short lectures, case studies drawn from corporate law departments, self-assessments, small- and large-group discussions and individual work. It is a program designed by in-house counsel for in-house counsel.

Attendees will learn to identify the major challenges, problems and roadblocks legal department leaders face as managers. The first day covers motivating others, emotional intelligence and workplace climate, delegating - the attorney manager's challenge, and providing reinforcing feedback and constructive criticism.

On the second day, topics include strategic thinking, planning and management; identifying strategic issues; developing strategic goals and objectives; project management; the art of woo - leading subordinates, your boss, your clients, outside counsel and others; managing change and leading transitions; and sustaining department quality and productivity.
