ABA To Host Seattle Conference On Legal Ethics

The American Bar Association's Center for Professional Responsibility is brewing up a conference on professional responsibility in Seattle. The seminar begins with registration on Wednesday, June 2 and will run through Saturday, June 5.

It will be held at the Westin Seattle, 1900 5th Avenue in Seattle, Washington.

On Wednesday registration begins at 5:00 p.m. Thursday's sessions are from 8:00 a.m. until 5:05 p.m. to be followed by a reception at 6:30 p.m., and on Friday segments are from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The program on Saturday starts at 8:00 a.m. and the seminar adjourns at noon.

Participants will be offered a variety of sessions focusing on ethics and professionalism presented by scholars, jurists and specialists in the professional responsibility field.

The topics cover a wide range of issues including ethical preparation of witnesses; conflicts of interest; confidentiality and attorney-client privilege; the ethics of investigations; sanctions for trial conduct; SEC prosecutions of lawyers; prosecutors' special responsibilities under amended Rule 3.8; virtual law practice; and restrictions to practice.

On Thursday afternoon a luncheon will honor Cleveland attorney Marvin L. Karp as the 2010 recipient of the ABA Michael Frank Professional Responsibility Award.

On Friday there will be a roundtable discussion including the work of the ABA's Commission on Ethics 20/20, academic research projects and ideas, and risk management functions at law firms or corporate law departments.

The speakers include Bruce A. Green, Louis Stein professor at Fordham Law School; Paula Frederick, general counsel for the State Bar of Georgia; Robert Aronson, Betts, Patterson & Mines professor at the University of Washington School of Law; andJennifer Lynch, teaching fellow and lecturer in the Samuelson Law, Technology & Public Policy Clinic at Berkeley Law.
