The Mecklenburg County Bar honored McGuireWoods, Bank of America and Duke Energy with its “Collaborative Pro Bono Project Award” in recognition of the organizations’ Day of Legal Advocacy clinic in Charlotte.
The third annual clinic — held Oct. 18, 2018, at Supportive Housing Communities’ McCreesh Place — brought together nearly 100 volunteers from the three organizations as well as legal aid providers Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy and Legal Aid of North Carolina. The nonprofit SHC provides permanent supportive housing for chronically homeless individuals and families.
Volunteers prepared healthcare powers of attorney and helped with criminal expunctions and driver's license restorations. The clinic also included a general referral table where lawyers and staff from the firm, Bank of America and Duke Energy worked with legal aid providers to provide on-the-spot legal advice.
McGuireWoods senior counsel and Charlotte office pro bono co-coordinator Carter Arey joined with Bank of America process design consultant Dawn Sewell and Duke Energy Deputy General Counsel Greer Mendelow in accepting the award at the MCB’s Feb. 7 banquet.
“We are proud to partner with our clients, Bank of America and Duke Energy, and with Charlotte’s legal aid groups on this important pro bono clinic,” said Arey, a member of the SHC board of directors. “We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to Supportive Housing Communities’ good work through this annual event.”
