McCarter & English, LLP, a regional law firm, has named Kenneth R. Levonaitis as its first chief information officer. Mr. Levonaitis formerly held a similar position at New York's Pennie & Edmonds LLP, a large intellectual property law firm which dissolved recently.

"We have always had strong information services capability, but as we grow, we need an executive of Ken's caliber to keep our technology focused on client service," said Lois M. Van Deusen, the firm's managing partner. "With seven offices, over 300 lawyers, a national client base and more expansion ahead, maintaining a solid strategic technology vision is important."

Prior to Pennie & Edmonds, Mr. Levonaitis was a national technology manager at Ernst & Young LLP.

The creation of the CIO position follows other structural changes that have moved McCarter & English from traditional law firm management-by-committee toward a corporate model. The firm's first chief operating officer, a professional manager who is not a lawyer, was named in 2001.
