Washington, D.C. - The Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) has announced the top three finalists for the 2016 Thomas L. Sager Award, which is presented to a law firm that has demonstrated a sustained commitment to improve the hiring, retention and promotion of diverse attorneys. The winner of the national Sager Award will be announced at MCCA’s Diversity Gala at the prestigious Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday, July 19, 2016.
This year’s three national finalists are:
•    Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP
Akin Gump’s Mandate for Diversity articulates the firm’s goal of becoming a leader in diversity and serves as a guideline for their ongoing efforts. This mandate underscores the belief that diversity is both consistent with their goal to become a highly successful firm and essential to achieving that success.
•    Littler Mendelson P.C.
As the nation’s largest employment and labor law firm, Littler has formed an experienced, diverse team of lawyers and professional staff that understands and embraces the dynamics of a constantly evolving workforce. The firm views diversity as a core cultural value that is critical to their continued success.
•    Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP
Sheppard Mullin first established its diversity committee in the early 1990s to address a variety of critically important issues facing the legal profession. Since then, the firm-wide Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Committee – with top-down support – has guided and sponsored numerous initiatives and programs to help fulfill their mission in this area.
The three finalists will have an opportunity to showcase their diversity and inclusion efforts in a 2-minute video, to be shown at the MCCA Diversity Gala at the Kennedy Center, where more than 1,000 people will attend, including about 500 in-house lawyers.
“We thank our three strong finalists for their leadership and commitment to creating diverse and inclusive workplaces at their firms,” said MCCA President and CEO Jean Lee. “I have no doubt that with partners like these, MCCA’s work in pursuing greater diversity in the corporate and legal fields will continue to grow in scope and impact.”
Named after legal diversity pioneer Thomas L. Sager, the Sager Award honors firms and organizations who mirror the qualities of the former DuPont general counsel: leadership by example, perseverance in the face of competing interests and a deep, consistent sense of responsibility for creating results.
