January-February 2018 Publisher's Note

This year is MCC's 25th anniversary. As we considered how to mark this milestone, we reflected on the profound changes to corporate law departments since our first issue in 1993. Emblematic of those changes is the role of the general counsel.

The GC, once viewed as a back-office legal naysayer, has become a trusted business advisor in the executive suite and the boardroom. That transformation, from dealbreaker to dealmaker, is one of the most important developments in the corporate legal market over the last 25 years. As we pondered MCC's past, we also looked to its future. That led us to Corporate Counsel Business Journal.

MCC's founder, Al Driver, spent much of his legal career as GC of one of the world's leading retail brands. Al was a pioneer, building a progressive, 60-person law department way ahead of its time. Upon retirement, he launched MCC to deliver information tailored specifically to corporate counsel in the Greater New York area. His wife, Martha, a financial executive with TIAA-CREF, soon joined him as publisher. It was a labor of love that lasted more than 20 years.

As the GC's role changed, so did publishing. MCC outran its tri-state and print beginnings and became increasingly global and digital. Today, with the launch of CCBJ, we continue our evolution. We have changed our name, our format, our frequency and our business model. With our parent company, Law Business Media, we have also expanded our platform. What we have not done, however, is budge from our original mission, which makes as much sense today as it did 25 years ago. We are a community of interest - a network - united in our desire to understand and serve the evolving needs of corporate counsel.
