A Letter From The President Of The New York County Lawyers' Association

2014-09-11 10:51

To The Readers of The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel:

We think we’re on the right track. For over 100 years NYCLA has worked diligently to serve our community and to equip our membership with the knowledge and training to further develop their careers.  This year is no different.

  • Our newspaper, New York County Lawyer, is written by lawyers for lawyers and covers the latest in legal trends, covering topics such as “Going Solo,” “Educating Tomorrow’s Lawyers,” and “The Changing Workplace: Legal Issues.” Published ten times a year, it is the go-to resource for developments in legal practice and a benefit of membership.
  • NYCLA is an accredited provider of CLE in both New York and New Jersey. NYCLA was one of the first bar associations in the nation to offer CLE programs, having offered courses in all aspects of professional practice for over 25 years. The NYCLA CLE Institute offers programs to meet all types of needs — live instruction, online classes, and recorded programs.
  • We have several upcoming programs featuring CLEs to educate our members and the legal community on emerging issues including the October 16 program, Best Friends Forever: Secrets of a Successful Relationship Between In-House and Outside Counsel.
  • During this program, a panel comprised of in-house and outside counsel will reveal the secrets to developing successful working relationships between the counterparts – including the ethical considerations that must be taken into consideration. David Stimson of Nixon Peabody LLP will moderate the program which will feature panelists including Sarah Feingold, Etsy Inc.; Dyan Finguerra-DuCharme, Pryor Cashman LLP; Peter Harvey, Harvey Siskind LLP; and Matthew Pater, Pfizer Inc. This is one program no corporate or outside counsel can afford to miss!
  • Meanwhile, on October 6, Loretta E. Lynch, U.S. attorney, Eastern District of New York, will deliver the 51st Charles Evans Hughes Memorial Lecture co-sponsored by NYCLA and Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP. This lecture pays tribute to Hon. Charles Evans Hughes (1862-1948), one of the founders of Hughes Hubbard, who served as NYCLA's eighth president (1919-1921), governor of New York (1907-1910), associate justice of the Supreme Court (1910-1916), U.S. secretary of state (1921-1925) and chief justice of the Supreme Court (1930-1941).

I’m asking for your help—do these programs address your concerns? Do you have any suggestions to make them better? Are there other programs that would be helpful to you? Feel free to reach out to me at 212-754-9000 or ltesser@tesserryan.com. I also encourage you to visit nycla.org to learn more about our upcoming programs covering these and other topics of interest to the legal community and the benefits of membership, and to tweet me @NYCLAPres and share what topics you would like to see NYCLA cover in its publications and at its programs.
