Letter From The President Of ACC British Columbia

2013-08-16 14:04

The British Columbia Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel recently celebrated its one-year anniversary.  We have had a busy and exciting year to date and look forward to more of the same in the next twelve months.

Over the past year, we have hosted several informative and well-received educational sessions on current developments in the law (important tax changes in BC, legal developments in cybersecurity, and M&A/security law updates), on ethical considerations for in-house lawyers (implementation of a new Code of Conduct in BC) and on practical issues facing in-house counsel in their day-to-day practice (moving from private practice to an in-house role).

Our board has spent a great deal of time developing and implementing a sponsorship policy that will allow us to identify and engage sponsor firms with whom we will be able to deliver consistent and valuable programming for the next year.   Although at the time of writing our application period for sponsors for the coming year has not yet closed, we have already filled our top-tier sponsorship placements and are well on our way to having a very full educational program during the next year.  We are planning on finalizing our schedule of events in September and will then be able to announce to our members a number of opportunities to further enhance their legal knowledge.

In addition, we are planning a “back-to-school” networking kickoff event in September where our members will be able to meet and relax over food and drinks as everyone gets into the fall rush. Our board has also sought to create closer ties with our ACC sister chapters to provide even further opportunities to our members.  As a result of those efforts, the ACC BC Chapter and the ACC Washington State Chapter have invited all local members to attend a joint educational/networking session in Seattle, where ACC members will be able to learn more about the legal issues around managing international subsidiaries, and we will follow that up by having dinner together and then attending the Major League Soccer match between the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Seattle Sounders.  The members of each chapter will most certainly enjoy the rivalry between our respective home teams as we cheer them on to victory.

As we grow as a chapter and as a board, we hope to be able to offer a more diverse and vibrant range of educational and networking opportunities for our members.  As an organization, we are developing stronger relationships with the British Columbia legal community, and that will serve to benefit all of our members in the long run.

Please check out our home page at http://www.acc.com/chapters/bc/. We update this page regularly as we finalize the details of our upcoming programming so you will be able to find a listing of all upcoming events. The names and contact details of each of our board members is also on our page, so please feel free to reach out to any of us if you have questions or comments regarding our chapter.
