Letter From The President Of The ACC British Columbia Chapter

To The Readers Of The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel:

I am extremely excited and pleased to be able to write to you on behalf of the newly formed British Columbia Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACCBC). We plan to build on ACC’s long-established traditions by providing quality legal educational programming to the British Columbia (BC) in-house community as well as hosting entertaining networking functions at which BC in-house lawyers will be able to socialize in a fun and welcoming environment.

British Columbia is geographically very large - larger than France and Germany combined - and while many in-house departments are headquartered in Vancouver, the board is also developing a plan to deliver programming to in-house counsel in smaller markets through the use of technology where necessary, and live programs wherever possible.

ACCBC has a dedicated and energetic board whose members represent multiple industries and bring a wealth of experience to the table. We also have strong relationships with many of the leading practitioners in the province, both in-house and in private practice, and hope to be able to leverage those to provide insightful, top-quality and topical programming.

Our goal is to focus on topics of common interest, such as strategies for getting better value from outside counsel, ethics developments, promoting pro bono work and global compliance. British Columbia is strategically important as Canada’s gateway to the Asia-Pacific region and has a diverse economy that ranges from traditional resource industries such as forestry, mining, fishing and agriculture to new industries, such as ecotourism, agritourism, film and high tech.

While our board has only had one official meeting as a formal chapter, we already have at least two educational programs being finalized for the autumn as well as a chapter kick-off social event in September. We want to introduce all British Columbia’s in-house lawyers to ACC and all that it has to offer.

Please check out our home page at http://www.acc.com/chapters/bc/ where you will find a listing of upcoming events that will be updated as details are finalized, as well as the names of the current board along with contact information for each of us. Please feel free to reach out if you are headed out this way.

We are eagerly looking forward to an exciting year of service to the BC in-house community.
