ACC Houston Recent Milestones - ACC Houston Reaches 1,000-Member Mark, Funds $60,000 for Diversity Law Student Scholarships and Hosts First All Day CLE Symposium

It is my honor to announce that ACC Houston now has over 1,000 members and to congratulate the members of the board of ACC Houston on this milestone. When I joined ACC Houston, there were about half this many members. The board of ACC Houston greatly believes that the continuing increase in membership is largely due to ACC Houston's excellent CLE programs and other successful programs. ACC Houston's monthly chapter meeting CLE programs have grown to near-capacity attendance. Most of our practice groups (Energy, Best Law Department Practices, Employment/Labor, International, and Intellectual Property) have had increases in attendance for the practice group CLE events. Our pro bono committee has continued to expand its activities to include clinics, will-a-thons, and a project with Houston Habitat for Humanities' Homeowner Association. Our diversity committee is providing scholarships and excellent programs, and our membership committee has implemented new member orientation programs and has driven initiatives that also have had no small part in our increasing membership. Without a doubt, the growth of the chapter and the excellence of its many programs and events is a result of the time and commitment of ACC Houston's board members, practice group members, committee members and our administrators.

After a successful increase in revenues for ACC Houston, the ACC Houston Board of Directors increased the funding of its Diversity Law Student Scholarships from $48,000 to $60,000. The diversity scholarships will be awarded this fall to qualified law students at the three Houston area law schools, where applications for the scholarships are available. The applications for the diversity scholarships are screened, and recipients of the scholarships are determined by ACC Houston's diversity committee. The diversity committee also hosts a reception for the scholarship recipients that Chapter sponsors may attend, and it provides one-day internships for diversity students and a presentation at the law schools on life as an in-house attorney.

As part of ACC Houston's continuing expansion of programs, the chapter successfully held its day-long "Back to School" Symposium on Thursday, August 25. Presenters from Vinson & Elkins, Andrews Kurth, Winston & Strawn, Beck Redden Secrest, Blake Cassels and Graydon, LexisNexis and Collier Legal Search gave CLE programs on a variety of timely topics.

If you are interested in joining ACC Houston or becoming an ACC Houston sponsor, or if you are already a member and are interested in becoming a member of the diversity committee or want to become involved with any other program or project, please contact nerissa@amchouston.com.
