Once an esoteric area encountered by few attorneys, patents and patent law issues have become ubiquitous with Apple v. Samsung, huge patent damage awards, and the America Invents Act (often referred to as the patent reform act). This program introduces the non-practitioner to some basic patent law concepts, including the differences between patents and copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets; why patents are valuable; how to read and understand a patent; how to translate an idea into a patent; the meaning of patent infringement, invalidity and unenforceability; and how patent litigation differs from other types of litigation. Key aspects of the America Invents Act will also be discussed.
