International Women’s, a day of global celebration of women, is marked on March 8 every year. The Law Society will be hosting the Summit to celebrate the day. It is jointly organized by the Law Society and the USA-based National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) and is supported by the Association of Women Solicitors (AWS) and Catalyst. The Summit, sponsored by LexisNexis, will consist of a one-day conference, preceded by a networking gala dinner on the evening of 7 March.

While the number of women entering the legal profession has increased steadily, there is evidence that there are factors that negatively impact on their careers because of their gender. The top of the legal sector remains stubbornly male dominated with the belief that high-status roles can only be achieved at the sacrifice of personal values and family relationships.

Over the past three decades, much work has been done from both the organizational and national perspectives to identify and address the barriers to women’s career progression. The aim of the summit is to identify and address the barriers to women’s career progression through the exchange of successful strategies for change and to create a manifesto that will drive a more proactive agenda at both national and international levels.

The summit program brings together a dynamic mix of high-profile keynote speakers, informative and interactive plenary sessions and a stimulating array of interactive and delegate-led breakout sessions covering a range of topical issues affecting women in law, including, The numbers game: do targets or quotas work?; When commitment isn't enough: the role of workplace culture on women's careers; Maximizing talent potential: working practices that support both women and men; Moving up: mechanisms that support women to progress; and Globalization: the role and impact on women's careers.

The gala dinner on the eve of the summit combined with a working lunch and post-summit drinks reception on the day of the conference will provide ample opportunity for delegates, speakers and sponsors to mingle and network.
