The District of Columbia Bar Association is offering a popular two-part seminar for solo and small firm practitioners. Part one is on Wednesday, October 5, The Solo’s Characteristics and Workplace. Part two The Real Business of Law (Marketing, Client Relations and Productivity) is on Wednesday, October 26. Both classes will be located at the DC Bar Conference Center at 1101 K Street, NW in Washington, DC; each begins at 9:15 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m.

Part one is for lawyers who want to learn about the methods and skills necessary for starting-up and running a solo or small firm in the DC area.

Part one topics are the solo’s workplace, firm naming, insurance and office location issues, office operations, fees and agreements, planning for the unexpected, and forming a business plan.

Part two is for small firms and solo practitioners who need to learn the methods and skills necessary for marketing and growing a firm.

Topics covered in part two include: working strategically on your business; marketing on a shoestring and marketing to avoid; building a website that can be found; the contacts list and mining the gold therein; free and low cost legal research; case management and billing solutions;  and thinking tools and productivity as well as client issues.
