On Thursday and Friday, August 18 and 19, the State Bar of Texas will offer Governance of Nonprofit Organizations.

This two-day program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday at the Four Seasons Hotel, 98 San Jacinto Blvd. in Austin.

Topics on Thursday include legal and tax rules for investing; legal principles to follow in structuring investment policies for nonprofits; program-related investing; and nonqualified deferred compensation for nonprofit executives. A panel discussion, Setting and Defending Compensation, will include panelists Susan K. Staricka, Office of the Attorney General, chief, Charitable Trusts Section/ Consumer Protection – Public Health Division, and Bob Cartwright, president and CEO, Intelligent Compensation LLC. Tim Delany, president and CEO, National Counsel of Nonprofits, will offer Thursday’s luncheon presentation: Politics, Influencing Legislation and Special Interests: What is Acceptable? Policies nonprofits need, including 990 categories, conflicts of interest and whistleblowers, will be covered by Richard W. Meyer, Texas Association of Nonprofit Organizations.

On Friday, a legislative case update, bankruptcy of nonprofits, how to identify good board members, how to handle conflict among board members, advising on the financial health of a nonprofit, and fraud monitoring are among the topics being discussed.
