ACI Plans Employment Discrimination Workshop

Tuesday, November 2, 2010 - 00:00

For two days in December, Wednesday and Thursday, December 8 and 9, the American Conference Institute will run a National Forum on Defending and Managing Employment Discrimination Litigation at Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf, 2500 Mason Street in San Francisco.

On Wednesday, the conference will run from 8:15 a.m. to 5:40 p.m., and on Thursday it will run from 8:00 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. Two optional workshops are being presented along with the conference. On Tuesday, December 7, workshop A - The Cross-Border Employment Agreements Swap: An Unparalleled Benchmarking Opportunity - will run from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., and on Thursday, December 9, an ERISA Boot Camp for Labor & Employment Attorneys will run from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The conference is devoted entirely to the defense of claims. The volume of employment discrimination litigation has greatly increased over the last few years with no signs of slowing down. The cases are complex, and the stakes involved for defendants are exceptionally high. The defense bar is seeing more and more class actions and collective claims, and there is no room for error in defense of these claims. In response to this situation, ACI will cover such issues as overly aggressive tactics by opposing counsel that have made the defense of cases significantly more expensive; credibility of company and management witnesses in front of the jury and turnover in the workplace leading to key witnesses no longer being with the employer; jury communication and advocacy in employment discrimination cases - humanizing the employer and overcoming sympathy for plaintiffs and bias against companies; and admissibility of evidence.

Among the conference speakers are Julie A. Vogelzang, partner, Duane Morris LLP; Rachel L. Barack, senior corporate counsel, The Clorox Company; Leslie E. Silverman, partner, Proskauer Rose LLP (and former vice chair of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission); and Thomas E. Reddin, Winstead.
